Could decolonization have happened without violence? Were decolonizers fascists? In history, significant change, sometimes for the worse, happened and was maintained by either internal or external violence.
Think about billionaires controlling your country. Do you think they will relinquish their privileges by making them ‘aware’? By reasoning with them? By asking them kindly?
BTW, I’m against and scorn all religions but it is effective at mobilizing people, especially into violence (perhaps especially the turn-the-other-cheek one’s). I’ve lived through a civil war and have seen it. The priests and religious leaders were the most sanguine. I criticize Christianity here because I was born such and grew up in that community.
The eventual result of violent revolt on a society depends on the eventual system imposed. Yes, fascists (I.E. better defined as corporatists, according to Mussolini) get into power through violence. But not all violence leads to fascism or is committed by fascists. For example, Switzerland passed through intense violence to reach its current state. A violent warlord had to conquer all of Switzerland, then he arranged a transition to a new system.
For change to happen, you need a system whose dynamics and justification is accepted widely. That’s where awareness comes in. To effect the change, whether good or bad, you need violence. Power cedes only to power.
