While this is an important discovery, it will only have a small overall effect on China. China consumes roughly 14 million barrels of oil a day. This gas field, if we compare it to another huge and already developed gas field, like the Marcellus Shale in the U.S., can produce at most 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent BOE (it’s gas, not oil), and probably less than that. That’s less than 1% of China’s current consumption when fully developed. Very impressive but not overly significant.
